Moving in, recovering a lost key, or updating an older front door can all start with the same question: do the locks need new keys, or does the hardware itself need replacing?
When new keys are the priority
Rekeying changes a compatible lock cylinder so it operates with a different key. The visible hardware can stay in place. It is worth discussing when your existing locks work well but you want to change who can open them.
After moving into a home, you may not know everyone who holds a copy of the old key. Review every exterior entrance, rather than focusing only on the front door.
When the hardware needs attention
If a lock sticks, feels loose or has visible damage, explain that before deciding on rekeying. A new key does not resolve a problem with the door, latch or worn hardware. Replacement can also be appropriate when you want a different finish or type of access.
What to prepare before calling
- How many doors need attention?
- Do you want the doors to share one key?
- Do the locks operate smoothly with the door open and closed?
- Are you keeping the current hardware style?
Lock72 can assess the existing hardware and discuss the appropriate options. Compatibility and door condition determine what can be retained.
