A smart lock should make coming home simpler. Before choosing a model, check how it fits your door and how you want to use it each day.
Start with the existing door
Note whether you have a separate deadbolt, an interconnected handleset or a multipoint lock. These are different hardware arrangements. A smart deadbolt is not automatically a replacement for every type of lock.
Door thickness, hole preparation and backset matter. Requirements vary by model, so use the instructions for the exact product you are considering.
Choose the access features you need
- Keypad codes for household members or visitors.
- A physical key as part of your preferred backup plan.
- Remote access through the manufacturer’s supported connection.
- Compatibility with your existing smart-home devices.
Do not assume that every model supports the same phone, hub or home automation platform. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility information before buying.
Look beyond the electronics
Tell the installer if you have to push or lift the door to lock it. Door and strike alignment should be considered alongside the installation.
For a useful first conversation, send photos of both sides of the door and the edge where the latch sits, along with the product name if you have already chosen one.
